Chronic dermatitis in a dog treated with classical homeopathy
Successful holistic treatment of chronic dermatitis with pruritus and partial alopezia in a German Shepherd dog named Lara. After 17 months of homeopathic and detoxifying treatment normalization of the general health condition was attained.
In May 2005 a 12yearold female German Shepherd dog was referred to me with a diagnosis of chronic recurrent dermatitis. Lara was in a severe apathetic condition with loss of appetite and acute inflammation of the skin on the abdominal, breast and lower neck side. There was intense red and warm skin with waste hair loss. The dog’s reaction on the skin has been suppressed since the appearance of the symptoms at the age of 6 years with antibiotica and cortison preparations. Since the beginning of suppressive therapy, the symptoms of eczema and alopezia, with itching on all parts of the body, have been more frequent until the general condition was severely affected and the suppressive therapy disrupted.
After the homeopathic anamnesis and clinical examination, the homeopathic therapy together with a supportive nutritional program and treatment of the acid-base balance was introduced.
During a period of 17 months Lara was treated with her constitutional remedy Phosphorus C30 initially and later with C200, Sulphur D12, after repeated antibiotic therapy, and Cortison C30 after the repeated cortison therapy. The acute reactions on the skin and ears with a massive dense odorous discharge were treated with Calendula D4. Due to the recurring acute skin reaction, a detoxifying therapy was carried out with Okoubaka D4, activated water and a balanced diet, rich in fiber and low in protein. The appearance of the skin symptoms, ear inflammation and discharge during the period of treatment were considered to be the consequence of reduced kidney function. Therefore therapy with Berberis D4 was repeated. The acute skin symptoms with itching and odorous ear discharge disappeared and the general state improved significantly.
Abnormal behavior in a young female German Shepherd dog
A young, 2yearold German female Shepherd dog named Bella was presented after parturition for very bizarre behavior, turning around and biting its own tail until bleeding and hurting herself. The symptoms of abnormal behavior had already begun about 6 months before homeopathic anamnesis and clinical exam. After the parturition the symptoms of abnormal behavior became even aggravated in terms of indifferent behavior to the puppies and abnormal playing with the meal dish in the presence of her partner dog or owner.
The intensity of symptoms of abnormal behavior aggravated during warm or hot weather. At the clinical exam there were no abnormal findings except rough skin with hair loss and a characteristic sloped »buckled« holding and swinging gate of the posterior legs.
In repertorisation with the Radar/Synthesis ) 9.1 version the following symptoms were traduced from the clinical symptoms into the repertory language:
Mind – sadness-anxious
Mind – behavioral problems children in – fears with
Mind – biting herself
Skin – rough
Generals – holding the part
Homeopathic therapy began with constitutional remedy: Phosphorus C200 at the beginning. After 4 weeks Bella the dog was still showing the symptoms of abnormal behavior, but without hurting herself. After commencing therapy with Rhus Tox C30 the symptoms of abnormal behavior have not disappeared, but the intensity of biting herself and the frequency of the attacks have significantly changed. Considering the symptoms of abnormal behavior, the second remedy evaluated in repertorisation, Stramonium in C30, was introduced two months after therapy with Rhus Tox C30 and continued for the following 10 weeks. Since her behavior has been persisting a higher potency may be selected in this case.
Classical homeopathy is the best hope for curing this type of conditiо. To treat such a condition homeopathically, one must attempt to find the cause of the dysfunction in that individual. Some common causes to consider are vaccinations, emotional traumas, physical traumas and suppression of other symptoms such as skin problems, digestive problems, etc. Since this is a functional problem and not generally associated with changes in the actual structure of the brain tissue, the problem can be resolved in a relatively short time. It is possible that some gentle behavioral therapy will be necessary, but that should be done once the general emotional state has improved. Otherwise, suppression of the emotions may occur.
Chronic weight loss and “exhaustive Syndrome” in a four year old Trotter horse
Successful homeopathic treatment in a »burn-out« syndrome in a four year old trotter horse after therapy with various liver and kidney medications due to constant body weight loss.
As a two year old he was considered to be one of the best trotters of his generation. During his successive initial racing career, the horse started to loose his body weight and his physical condition aggravated without establishing a clinical diagnosis. During two years of treatment and monitoring of his blood biochemical profiles the situation and general health showed no clinical improvement. The most significant changes occurred in blood picture and hematocrit values, indicating an anemic state. After the first homeopathic anamnesis and clinical exam, a series of biochemical blood tests for monitoring insulin and glucose intolerance, dexamethasone suppressive tests and TRH test were conducted. The results of the biochemical analyses have not revealed any significant changes in the function of endocrine glands, liver and kidneys.
Homeopathic therapy started with the constitutional remedy: Ca-Phos. D30 and Okoubaka D4 for 8 weeks. After correction of the teeth, the horse started to consume hay and became more energetic. Disappearance of muscle mass was considered to be the consequence of reduced liver function, therefore the homeopathic therapy was continued with Carduus marian. D6 and Okoubaka D4 until total recovery of the general state and his normal body weight, lasting 14 weeks. The abrupt change in the psychic behavior was manifested in showing his vitality and significantly increased appetite.
The symptoms of the described disease picture are considered to be the consequence of the abuse of ergogenic drugs used in racehorses.
